Poor lifestyle choices, such as smoking, poor diet, lack of physical activity and inadequate relief of chronic stress are key contributors in development and progression of preventable chronic diseases including obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and several types of cancer. Though healthy lifestyle behaviors are promoted in medical practice guidelines for prevention or management of most chronic conditions, they are not well implemented. Most patients understand the reasoning behind a healthy lifestyle, but lack the behavioral skills to implement that knowledge in the disease-promoting environment of everyday life in a sustainable way.
Wellness experts within the Center for Lifestyle Medicine of the Wellness Institute of Cleveland Clinic have successfully used a system of group-based, hands-on interventions for more than 4 years. These interventions include nutrition, culinary techniques, physical activity, and stress management approaches of therapeutic yoga and behavioral health coaching to improve outcomes for patients at risk and those who already have common chronic diseases.
They have shown that implementation of such comprehensive lifestyle modification programs among adults with common chronic conditions results in rapid, significant, clinically meaningful and sustainable improvements in biometric, laboratory and psychosocial outcomes (reference, Ricanati et al., Nutrition and Metabolism, 8:83, 2011).
